Instructions for Joining the Scan2 Syndicate

Thank you for your interest in helping the Scan2 Syndicate to transcribe the BMD Indexes. Formed at the beginning of the FreeBMD project the syndicate is still the largest and most productive syndicate within the project consisting of about 400 active transcribers. Scan2 has its own website enabling transcribers to monitor their own and the syndicates progress and providing guidance to new and experienced transcribers alike. We look forward to welcoming you as a member of the Scan2 team and hope you will enjoy the experience. You will receive support from our team of experienced transcribers and will soon become a valuable member of the team.

The instructions below explain the action needed to become a volunteer transcriber with Scan2

To enable you to upload to FreeBMD you will need to register to obtain a Submitter ID and Password. You can choose your own Submitter ID and password. You will then receive an email confirming your registration (which may take up to 24 hours). When you receive this email, please click on the box asking you to confirm that you still wish to join FreeBMD. You will then be authorized to submit data for the project.

Please print out your registration details and keep them in a safe place for future reference.

I am sure you will want to start contributing as soon as possible but we do need you to undertake a short training exercise to ensure you learn the FreeBMD transcription rules. We make this as short and as painless as possible so that you can be transcribing and uploading to the FreeBMD database real pages within a couple of days. You donít need to wait until registration is complete to get started. Send an E-Mail to Scan2 (giving your sumitter ID and PW) now and you will be set up and sent your training scan to transcribe along with full instructions. We will get this to you as soon as we can but while you are waiting for this to arrive you may wish to have a look at the scan2 website at and have a read of the project instructions found on the site. You may even wish to get ahead by downloading transcription software from
